Holography Workshops for Adults

Pseudo Color Reflection Holography
- Create Multi-Color Holograms with a Single-Color Laser.

Use a Red Laser to Create All Colors of the Spectrum in Your Holograms

Description: By pre-treating the holographic emulsion before each individual exposure, you can achieve a wide-range of multiple colors in your final hologram. This workshop will explore the technique called pseudo-color reflection holography. I created my first hologram using this method back in 1985, when it was very popular on the west coast of the USA (compared to white light transmission holography here on the east coast). I consider the 4-color crystal egg hologram above to be my crowning achievement in color range (deep red to deep violet) and registration.

There are several important topics to be covered in order to achieve great results, and they are:

  • Understanding emulsions and presoaking
  • Triethanolomine concentrations and playback wavelength
  • Calculating multi-color reference angles
  • Understanding registration and play back
  • Adjusting exposure times per TEA concentrations
  • The art of the squeegee
  • Order of color exposures
  • Troubleshooting

In this workshop we will work on a three-color, single-beam hologram, which is the easiest and least time-consuming to produce. You can then take all that you learn, and apply it to direct split-beam reflection, or H1 to H2 transfers. Note: Since this hologram is actually like producing 3 holograms, much time is spent in dim, safe-light conditions. Phone is: 610-770-0341. My Email address is:
