Which LASER is Best for Holography?

For decades, holographers have relied on the expensive Helium-Neon LASER to create holograms. We have now witnessed a shift in this technology with the advent of inexpensive semiconductor (diode) LASERs.

While a new, 5-milliwatt HeNe LASER will cost around $800-900, the same power diode laser will run around $14-15. This is an incredible break-through for holography.

But which LASER is best?

I have spent nearly a half-year researching LASER diodes (from low power to high power) for use in holography. I have found, without question, that the inexpensive LASER diode is far superior to ANY expensive Helium-Neon LASER that I have ever used.

I challenge anyone with a He-Ne LASER to create a hologram that is brighter, sharper and shows more depth than a hologram created with a LASER diode. This is due to the extreme stability and almost unlimited coherence length of the diode itself.

If someone tries to tell you that you cannot get good results with holography without using a Helium-Neon LASER -- it is simply not true. I have a $33 diode LASER that out-performs a $7,400 HeNe LASER. Notice the difference in price? Quite frankly, this is scaring a lot of people.
