The Titanic Holography Project 2002

WHAT IS THE TITANIC
HOLOGRAPHY PROJECT?

This project's goal is to create 3-dimensional laser holograms of the wreck of the Titanic.

Welcome to the Titanic Holography Project Homepage. My name is Frank DeFreitas and I am a holographer and director of HoloWorld. Each summer I take on a new personal holography project. These projects are not for profit and are funded entirely by myself, out-of-pocket.

This year, beginning in the Summer of 2002 -- after several years of on-again, off-again preparation -- I will be recording the Titanic as 3-dimensional laser holograms from archival film footage -- utilizing high-powered visible semiconductor lasers. This process has only been available since November of 1998 -- of which I was one of the researchers developing these lasers to be used with holography (to learn more about my experimental work, please click on the link at the bottom of this page).

When completed, these holograms (4 x 5-inches in size) will show the same images we are all familiar with -- only this time they will be completely three-dimensional. You will be able to see the wreck of the Titanic as if you were there with your own eyes looking through a porthole: objects close-up will be close-up, objects in the distance will be in the distance. Size and shape will take on a new meaning. You will be there -- just as the researchers were when it was discovered.

WHAT IS A HOLOGRAM?

Holograms are amazing three-dimensional images created with the use of lasers. Holograms can be created from actual objects, or from film footage, providing that it meets certain specificiations. Simply put, with the film-to-hologram technique, many different perspectives are combined in one holographic image. When you view the hologram, you see all the perspectives at one time, and your brain combines these images into one image -- which reconstructs the scene in three-dimensions as if you were actually there. If enough perspectives are included in the hologram, you can actually look around objects and see what is behind them.

You will be able to see the entire process of creating these holograms right here at this site. This site will be updated on a regular basis beginning mid-Fall 2002. I also plan to have an additional set of holograms available, on loan, to Titanic groups for display at no charge. Please feel free to contact me at the Email address listed below, or if you would like to receive updates to this project, and web site, once the project commences.
